It’s only one week until the end of the 2019 Winter Semeter. This is the 2nd semester  that I enrolled to take Professor Herbst’s class. After 2 semesters  of taking his class, I feel that I am lucky to be one of the students in his class.

He is always very dedicated to his lectures and always enthusiastic to answer his students’ questions or concerns. My work is very busy, there have been many times that I thought about dropping the class in the middle of the semester . However, because of his compassion and I am able to rearrange my work schedule to continue taking his class until now.

There is one story that I have strong impression and I could never forget because of his compassion and kindness. That day, he took his own time to take 2 new students from aboard to see the counselor so they could receive the best instructions and guidance of how to sign up for their classes effectively. His act of kindness makes me appreciated him even more because of the dedication to his students. His lessons always bring the inspiration to me when I’m learning English, the second language that I must learn if I want to find a good job here.

I would like to send my sincerely thanks to Mr. Herbst and wish him all the best and with good health to continue his teaching passion and to help us, the immigrants to the US, to be able to listen, speak, and write English well. You are the best teacher ever, Professor Herbst !!!

Should I call or define my last Halloween celebration “Halloween”? This is a true story of how I celebrated my Halloween on October 31, 2019.
In Huntington Beach where I live, there is a haunted castle that attracted many people during Halloween time. The owners have always made stunning decorations and opened the door to visitors on Halloween night for many years. I have been always curious about it and decided to find out for myself. However, I’m a little afraid of the scary decorations and costumes so I asked my girlfriend to go there with me. We made plan that my friend would come to my home to pick me up and then we would go to the haunted castle together. That sounds less scary and more excited.
When my friend arrived at my home, it was late, dark and cold so we decided to have a few glasses of wine to warm up before leaving. I put on my witch costume and then we got into the car and drove to the haunted castle. When we arrived there, we saw a huge crowd of people and a super long line in front of the castle. My friend asked me, “Was I too drunk that I drive us to Disneyland instead?”. We could not even find a place to park our car. We drove around a few times and discussed what we should do. Then I told my friend that it might not be a good idea to get in line while we were both a little drunk, even if we made it into the haunted castle, being drunk and being scared are not a good combination. We stopped and thought it through, finally we have made a decision that we would go home. When we got home, we continued to drink and wine and snacked cheese while we were talking, making fun of each other and laughing. Our jaws were event hurt because of too much laugh. It turned out that I had a wonderful Halloween with my friend.

I never forget that moment I’m still  embarrassed when thinking about that although It was happened 40 years ago😂. I was 4 years old, stayed home alone while  my grandfather was going out to buy newspapers. Suddenly, I wanted to poo even I did it in the early morning as my daily routine. The restroom was in the backyard, and the door of house was still open. We lived in countryside and in the small town, so people were never closed the house doors when having someone is home. I really wanted to poop so badly, but I didn’t know how to close the door which was to big for me at that time.  Also, I worried if the door still opened when I was in the rétroom, maybe my house would be robbed. Therefore, I pooped on the floor right in the middle of the living room where people came in the house and could saw ðŸ’©clearly😂. However, I thought I was smart, so I used my favorite grandmother’s hat to cover it. After being proud of myself about good idea to protect the house, I was asleep, and I slept on the floor closing to “the hat”. Finally, my grandfather came back, and held me his hand before picking the hat up by another hand. While he was picking up the hat, I smelled badly. It was too late for me to warn him. All of my bowel fell on my grandfather pants and my body. It was dirty and stinky I have seen in my life. So now when I say I have a good idea, whole my family including  my children laugh and always think about my past😂

Rome wasn’t built in a day. Yes, it is totally right. The good result is never gotten easily. Working hard is not enough to get good results, so you need to have a patience. Day by day, step by step and little by little, you will get big results. Nothing for you is just one day, short time. Like studying foreign language, you can’t talk , speak or write well it in short time. You improve it every day by repeating, practicing, listening and speaking. After that you will be perfect.
In my country people often says “ Có công mài sắt có ngày nên kim”. It means practise is perfect, or diligence is the mother of success. They have an example very impressive : “you can make a stone of metal like iron becoming a needle if you try to grind it everyday.” Yes, it is not one day and needs a lot of days.
A wider meaning, in relationships aren’t built in a day too. It will be stronger and more durable after a lot of time up and down, from past to now and even in future. There are no good relationships if not have challenges, sharing, understanding day by day. On the another way this proverb can understand like “ Knowledge is like a garden: if it is not cultivated, it cannot be harvested”

I’m Maymay. I came to US for my children’ education. I would like to improve English when I’m living here. Going to college and attending ESL classes are the way to help me to speak and write English better.
I,also, love to travel. This is another way for me to learn English and get knowledge, too. I just visited Korea one week after I had spent time with my family in Saigon,Vietnam last summer. The most thing impressive me in Korea trip was Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) tour. DMZ is the “hottest” place in the world, and aslo very currios for peole. It is a buffer zone between South and North Korean for political meeting without violence. It have happened a lot of family reunions from both side. The last special meeting in there was June 30,2019 between U.S. President Donald J. Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. I’m a type of person who doesn’t pay attention to politics, but this trip has changed my mind because I have realized politics to affect your life everyday so much. The poor people, who live in North Korea, are the victims of their government. The people, nations from all the world, specially South of Korea,  are trying to help them to get out of theirs country or have a better life. It is called politics.
